CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Bargain hunters and others are looking over items at Chicago-area Toys R Us stores now that the longtime toy retailer announced it’s going out of business in the U.S.

WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts has been talking to shoppers checking out the store at Western and Roscoe on Chicago's Northwest side.

Signs at the door say 10 to 30 percent off. One shopper walked directly to the service counter and asked: Where are the toys that are 30 percent off? The truth is, most price reductions were 10 percent.

That was enough for a woman named Ellie, who lives nearby.

“You are talking about an institution. Sorry to see it go. It’s a great place. I’ve loved coming here just for the kids.”

She says she does not shop online, which is a major reason the store chain has foundered in recent years.

Gift cards will be honored through April 21.
