CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In a major upset, incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski was defeated by Marie Newman in the 3rd Congressional District.

Newman had a short but historical lead against Lipinski with nearly 48% of the votes while Lipinski was close behind at 42% out of the nearly 90% of the reported precincts.

Newman declared victory on Twitter, although the race was not officially called since mail-in ballots still need to be counted through March 31.

"I am bursting with pride and gratitude for the amazing coalition that helped bring about much-needed change in our district," Newman tweeted. "We are going to work together to lower health care costs, to fight climate change, and to build an economy that works for everyone."

The 3rd District Congressman represents Chicago’s Southwest Side and some south and southwest suburbs. Lipinski, a household name for many Chicagoans, is anti-abortion and conservative on economic issues and worries that the Democratic Party is veering far to the left. Newman proved that is true and has positioned herself as a more progressive liberal.

Political analyst Andy Shaw said the close lead showed that the Lipinski name is still huge on the Southwest Side and that his conservative beliefs are still felt in the community.

"The name is still magic, which says a lot in politics," Shaw said.

In contrast, Shaw said Newman had the endorsement of virtually every progressive fundraising muscle and women organizations, which brought in more support for the democrat.
