LINDENHURST (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 23-year-old Evanston man is in custody after an armed robbery attempt at a Lindenhurst home early Tuesday left his accomplice dead, authorities in Lake County said.

Michael J. Zachery and a 34-year-old of Chicago man drove to a residence in the 300 block of Teal Road, ostensibly to purchase a firearm, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said in a news release.

But after meeting the firearm seller, the duo attempted to rob the victim, striking the seller several times with a hammer, police said.

The victim shot one of the robbers – the Chicago man – and fatally wounded him. Zachery was detained until Lindenhurst police officers arrived, around 2:30 a.m., authorities said.

The Chicago man has not been identified.
