CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot has a dim view of some of President Trump’s remarks in the in the wake of the mass shootings in Ohio and Texas.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports.
Speaking Monday in Lawndale – which saw its own gun violence over the weekend – Lightfoot said she doesn’t want to get into a cycle of saying whether something President Trump says is racist or not. But she implored the president to set a better, clearer tone.
“What he’s been doing is blowing every racist, xenophobic dog whistle,” the mayor said. “When you do that, when you blow that kind of dog whistle, animals come out.”
Lightfoot did jab at the president’s call for laws that would better prevent someone with a severe mental illness from buying a gun. How can you have such a red flag, she asked, if you don’t have universal background checks for all gun sales?
