CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot says a sharp increase in crimes on the CTA since 2017 is unacceptable, and she promised Friday to address the issue.

Numbers point to a three-year surge in crimes on Chicago Transit Authority buses and trains. Lightftoot said she’s told officials in the Chicago Police Department and CTA they must work together to fundamentally turn things around.

The city cannot have people afraid to ride public transportation, she said.

At an unrelated event, the mayor also told reporters she is unhappy with violent crime numbers throughout the city this month. Those numbers were higher than expected and not acceptable, she said.
