(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle have endorsed State's Attorney Kim Foxx for re-election.

In Foxx's 10-minute speech thanking the mayor and the board president for their support, she only alluded to the Jussie Smollett case.

She dropped charges, you'll remember, and Monday Smollett pleaded not guilty to charges re-filed by a special prosecutor.

"We'll talk about this case and talk about this case. And I will remind you that just this week, on Monday, when there was a lot of attention about that, there was a family who had to walk past the media scrum, holding each other's hands as they were going to the homicide case of the loss of a loved one."

Afterward, Mayor Lightfoot told reporters Foxx's handling of the Smollett case "really didn't" enter into her decision to endorse Foxx.

"I think that Kim has said, with the benefit of hindsight, that they absolutely could have done better. But to focus on a single case out of the tens of thousands -- particularly when, me, as a mayor, what I care about is not Jussie Smollett. What I care about is the violent people in communities who are terrorizing and reducing the quality of life.”

Foxx -- who faces a crowded Democratic primary to run for her office again -- received the endorsements at Painters union hall on the Near West Side.
