CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A familiar name will lead Mayor Lori Lightfoot's new school board.

The previous school board resigned en masse, giving Lightfoot the opportunity to appoint an entirely new school board.

The Preisdent of the new school board is Miguel del Valle. He is a former Chicago City Clerk, a former State Senator, and candidate for mayor in 2011.

Del Valle said his school board will not be a rubber stamp. Instead, he wants the school board to speak up.

"Bring that expertise and also challenge our departments, challenge our staff in board meetings," del Valle said. "Not for the purpose of trying to bring someone down or embarrass people but to move things forward."

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the appointment of a new school board does not mean the push for an elected school board is dead. She wants state lawmakers to draft an elected school board bill that will allow parents to serve.

"I don't want school board elections to turn into multi-million dollar excercises where parents have no path and ability to participate," Lightfoot said.

Currently, there are three parents on the board.

Janice Jackson will stay on as the CEO.
