CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Pride Month in Chicago kicked off this weekend with a highly visible standard bearer: the city’s first openly gay mayor.

"I've never seen anyone who looks like any part of me standing on a podium as a mayor,” Sasha Goldberg said Sunday as Mayor Lori Lightfoot keynoted an event sponsored by Equality Illinois.

Attendees said Lightfoot gives the LGBTQ community a sense of visibility.

"It makes me very hopeful for the youthful today to see a gay mayor who is successful and living her best life,” Matthew Hollis said.

Mayor Lightfoot says the city of Chicago has made progress with the LGBTQ community, but there's more work to be done.

"We still have way too many youth who are homeless who have been kicked out of their homes because they're choosing to live their authentic life,” she said.
