CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A west suburban lawmaker is proposing stiff increases to the fines for striking workers in construction zones.

The measure sponsored by Illinois State Sen. Tom Cullerton of Villa Park would create a violation for intentional encroachment into a work zone, with a fine of up to $1,000. It also would increase the maximum fine for hitting a worker to $25,000 from the current $10,000.

"Distracted driving is not a joke," Cullerton said.

The measure would apply to road projects statewide, although Toll Highway Authority Chairman Robert Schillerstrom presented the idea to Cullerton.

Cullerton expects bipartisan support.
