CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two weeks after voters went to the polls, there is a new winner in the race for Lake County, Illinois Sheriff.

The Lake County Clerk's office posted updated results and said Republican incumbent Sheriff Mark Curran lost the election to Democrat John Idleburg by 137 votes.

"I am very happy and elated being elected as Sheriff of Lake County," said Idleburg.

On Election Day, it was reported that Curran had won by about 800 votes. He said then that members of his Republican Party were being hurt by President Trump.

"He’s horrible for our brand," Curran said.

About 250,000 votes were cast in the sheriff's race.

Curran on Tuesday congratulated his Democratic opponent.

"I'm looking forward to working with the great men and women of the Lake County Sheriff's Department and moving forward," Idleburg said.

Democrats now have a majority on the County Board for the first time in Lake County history.
