DEERFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Wednesday June 13 was to have been the day gun owners in Deerfield had to turn in their assault weapons.

But Tuesday afternoon, a judge stopped that from happening -- for awhile, anyway.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

Deerfield's mayor had said the tipping point came with the shooting deaths of 17 people at a Parkland, Florida, high school.

It was time to pass an assault weapons ban, she said, and Deerfield leaders did.

The NRA stepped in. So did an Illinois group called Guns Save Life.

A Lake County judge Tuesday sided with gun owners, granting a temporary restraining order.

Deerfield released a statement, saying officials would honor the order and not enforce the assault weapons ban. They’re thinking about options, including an appeal.
