CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- By a 3-to-1 margin, voters in the 4th Congressional District have elected the replacement for long time representative Luis Guiterrez.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus 'Chuy' Garcia won the race for Illinois' 4th Congressional District seat in the House of Representatives. He replaces Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who has represented Illinois' 4th Congressional District since 1993.

Garcia said it is a big moment for progressives coast to coast. He is hoping it does not mean two years of gridlock on Capitol Hill, but he said, "we will have more leverage to really dig down into many questions that the Republicans have refused to look into pertaining to conflicts of interest, pertaining to issues that they have just not wanted to look at."

Instead he wants issues, such as healthcare, the cost of college, and the minimum wage addressed in a bipartisan manner. He is hoping more progressives see the coattails and run for local office beginning with Chicago City Council.

Rep. Gutierrez announced last November he wouldn't seek re-election in 2018 and said he was retiring was because Garcia was willing to run for his seat. The two share a long history and similar views on many issues.
