CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Jazz Festival is on at Millennium Park through Sunday.

WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller got a preview.

In the crowd, listening to the Chicago Cellar Boys, was a man from the UK.  John Thorpe.  A jazz drummer, well, a former drummer.

"We retired a couple of years ago. People tell us, as we get older, we should carry on, but the fingers lose it. I was dropping sticks and going home at 2 o'clock in the morning.”

John Thorpe was a drummer in a jazz trio but retired a couple of years ago because "the fingers lose it" after 80 years. (WBBM Newsradio)

He added: “Got a bit much for an 80-year-old, you know. You're knackered. That's an English term."

Referring to the Cellar Boys, WBBM asked: What do you think about them?

"Oh, lovely. They're playing to the audience. They're enjoying themselves.  The audience are enjoying it.  And that's what it's about, really: entertainment. And that's what they've always done. Lovely."
