CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In a pivotal suburban congressional race, a republican stronghold is threatening to vote democratic next week.

14th District Republican Congressman Randy Hultgren is facing a tough challenge from democratic newcomer and health expert Lauren Underwood, who is outspending him.

Underwood is campaigning hard on health issues, but Hultgren said more voters are interested in and happy about the economy.

"I am 52-years old. This is the best economy in my lifetime - lowest unemployment, highest growth, greatest opportunity, the highest amount of revenue coming into the government than ever," he said.

Underwood said that feeling’s not universal.

"We know for most middle class folks there has not been real wage growth. Those middle class families are not seeing that quote-unquote booming economy," she said.

Congressman Randy Hultgren said voters are responding to the success of the GOP’s economic agenda and President Trump’s tax cuts, but his democratic challenger Underwood said many in the middle class feel left out of this economic boom.
