BATAVIA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The murder of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbets and a disturbing encounter in the western suburbs earlier this month have police there warning residents to be on guard.

Batavia Police Detective Michelle Langston said a teenager was walking near a popular park earlier this month when she realized she was being followed.

The subject, a male who was in his late-teens, told her she was beautiful and then “asked if he could touch her,” Langston said.

The girl ran and the teenage boy left the area. In another incident this month, a Geneva woman was attacked when a man attempted to rob her and got away.

Walking or jogging in the daytime, bringing a friend along and keeping a cell phone handy are some of the tips Langston has for residents, many of whom are on edge, she said.

“With cases like Mollie Tibbets in the news, we do get more calls. That means that people are being more aware. Anyone can be a target. We want to be proactive in these types of situations.”
