CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Tollway is apologizing for Tuesday morning’s major traffic back-up near O’Hare Airport because of a longer-than-expected overnight lane closure.

Traffic was backed up for miles because the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) was down to one lane northbound at Irving Park Road.

Tollway spokesman Dan Rozek said contractors had trouble putting down striping and he said, part of that was due to the cold temperatures.

"That forced the delay of picking up the construction zone, so it was down to one lane a little longer than anticipated.  We regret the inconvenience it caused to customers. It was a one-time delay," he said.

There are clauses in Tollway contracts regarding penalties for things like leaving lane closures up longer than scheduled.

Rozek said officials are looking into whether there will be any retribution for the contractor responsible for Tuesday morning’s back-up.
