CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is  reporting the state's first death this year from West Nile virus.

Illinois Department of Public Health Spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says the person who died from West Nile lived in LaSalle County and was “65 years or older.”

“Typically, West Nile virus can have more severe illness for individuals who are older,” she said, “so, that's why it's important that they take precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites."

Last year, the first death of the year was reported on Sept. 29. There were a total of eight deaths from West Nile last year.

So far this year, there are 22 human cases of West Nile virus, Arnold said.
