(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – There's word that a tenth child in Illinois is being treated for symptoms of the paralyzing polio-like disease known as AFM.

All ten of the cases involve children, and all are from northern Illinois.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav Shah said Friday it’s understandable parents would be concerned. But the uptick may have occurred simply because his department sent doctors an alert about Acute Flaccid Myelitis a month ago.

That being said, Shah advises parents to observe certain safeguards.

“That includes things like making sure their vaccines are up to date, making sure they wash their hands, avoiding unnecessary contact with individuals who are sick and just keeping surfaces around the house clean.”

The origins of AFM are unclear. Shah said it may be a virus but it’s not polio.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said AFM, which causes weakness in the arms or legs, is still relatively rare. For additional information, click here.
