SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Red light camera talk is heating up at the statehouse. On Wednesday, the House passed a ban on the devices for Cook County, the collar counties and Madison County.

The HB 322 passed the House, 84-4-5.

Sponsoring State Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) is tying this to former State Sen. Martin Sandoval, who pleaded guilty in a scheme to protect red light vendors from a ban on their products.

“This is the bill I passed in 2015,” McSweeney said on the floor. “This is the bill that is so dangerous to the red-light camera companies that they acted to bribe a state senator. They have a roomful of lobbyists."

He called the House's passing a good first step in the right direction.

Other lawmakers criticized McSweeney for not waiting for a statewide ban to come around and accused him of using talking points and looking for a headline.
