CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Candidates were taking jabs at each other in a three-way debate in the race for Illinois Comptroller -- and some of it was about who’s running for what.

It took little time for the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board to ask Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza what voters should make of all the talk that she may run for Chicago mayor. She said she’s focusing on one election right now: the race for comptroller.

Her Republican rival -- former state representative Darlene Sanger -- asked if Mendoza would endorse a candidate in the mayor’s race.

Mendoza snapped back that the entire field of candidates is not known yet.

Libertarian Party hopeful – accountant Claire Ball -- said there was no need to question her. She said she is not interested in any other office besides comptroller.

All three candidates also sparred over pensions, policies and pure politics.
