Representative Sonya Harper said her community has been hit by twice the tragedy.

"The events that have taken place over this past weekend have been just as hurtful, or even more as the virus that has plagued our communities these past couple of months.

Rep. Harper said the events of the last several days should serve as a wakeup call for the community and the country.

"Let's take this opportunity to deal with crinimal justice reform and the state of emergency that we are now under due to rioting. Let's take this opportunity to support and rebuild the small businesses that are now shuttered - we are standing right in front of them today," she said.

She said looting is not the answer. Harper said community and criminal justice reform are desperately needed.

"When we talked about police violence, police injustice, and all of the injustices that have led us to these moments, they are all linked and they are all excuses for what has been going on in our communities and across the nation these past couple of days," she said.

The Illinois Black Caucus is also calling for an end to the looting and violence, and asking lawmakers, neighbors and activists to make real change for a positive future.
