Erika Harold Concedes Attorney General Race To Kwame Raoul

November 06, 2018 - 7:34 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Republican Erika Harold has conceded the Illinois attorney general race to Democrat Kwame Raoul.

Raoul, a Chicago Democrat and state senator, squared off against Harold, a lawyer from Urbana and former Miss America, in a sometimes rancorous contest. Each tried to paint the other in negative terms, with Raoul saying Harold was too socially conservate for Democrat-leaning Illinois and Harold faulting Raoul for machine politics under Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The office of attorney general -- state government's top lawyer -- has long been occupied by Lisa Madigan, the speaker's daughter and a former state senator. She opted not to run for re-election.

Raoul took over then-Sen. Barack Obama's seat in 2004.

Harold's admitted defeat came as Democrat J.B. Pritzker beat incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner.
