CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The faithful have been showing up at a Northwest Side church to see an icon of the Virgin Mary they believe has been weeping.

At Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Stathis Karavolos has been a chanter for more than 40 years.

He says he walked into the church and saw for himself that the icon of the Virgin Mary was weeping.

"I was very, very moved, and I couldn't even do the chanting at the beginning because I was kind of breaking down and crying.  It's just unbelievable,” he said Monday.

Some do find it unbelievable.

Skeptics wonder about the timing. The parish has been in Chicago for more than 120 years, but Holy Trinity is in bankruptcy court this week.

Church leaders are still hoping for a guardian angel to make everything right, despite almost insurmountable odds.
