(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is inviting community and political leaders to a “Citizen’s Academy,” a six-week course to see how ICE enforces immigration laws.

But Democratic Congressman Chuy Garcia of Chicago said it appears to be an invitation for people to become an extension of ICE.

“And my concern is that they could possibly be invited to surveil their neighbors and people who they might suspect as being undocumented,” Garcia said. “This is very, very concerning because it can lead to racial profiling and people turning other people in just because they don’t like the way they look or how they go about their ordinary business.”

ICE points out that other law enforcement agencies also have citizens academies.

ICE calls its inaugural effort “an opportunity to build a strong foundation of knowledge of an often misunderstood agency and mission."
