CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago's Home Run Inn is known around the country for its pizza but it didn't start out that way.

The original Home Run Inn tavern at 31st and Kildare was founded by Italian immigrants who served pizza as bar snacks instead of popcorn or pretzels.

Though Home Run Inn now has nine locations in Chicago and the frozen pizza is available in 40 states, it's returning to its neighborhood roots.

The company is opening a new location right next door to the original restaurant it opened 72 years ago in Little Village. The Tiffany lamps and cash register from the original spot will be featured in the dining room.

And it's still a family-owned business.

Gina Bolger, who is the current proprietor, told the Chicago Sun-Times that they plan to keep it in the family for decades to come.
