CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago is posed to experience the worst of this season's holiday roadway traffic as travelers return to their destinations today.

The day after Christmas is usually a busy travel day and roads across the city will be the most congested between 4:45 and 6:45 p.m. today.

Area motorists are joining the record 115.6 million Americans who are traveling during this year's peak holiday travel season, which began Dec. 21 and will continue until Jan. 1, according to a AAA press release. The nearly 116 million American travelers are about a 4 percent, or 4.3 million-person, increase than a year ago.

"Holiday cheer is at an all-time high this year, with unemployment at historically low levels, and noted improvements in both disposable income and household net worth," said Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel. "Travelers should be getting used to crowded highways and airports, as this marks the eighth straight year of new record-high travel volumes for the year-end holidays."

The best way to get around this? Get a head start and plan ahead for delays.
