(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Great Blue Heron found dead in Will County -- hanging from a tree -- is a sad reminder of what fishermen should not do, officials say.

It was spotted this past weekend in Joliet.

"One of our employees was out at Rock Run Rookery Preserve taking photos, and he noticed something in a tree. Especially now, at this time of year, there aren't any leaves on the trees,” Will County Forest Preserve District Spokesperson Cindy Cain said Monday.

“Unfortunately, it was another bird that had been tangled in fishing line. And it was dead in the tree."

Cain said the heron was hanging by its neck.

This is the fourth time in two years that they've seen birds dead after being tangled in a carelessly discarded fishing line.

Cain says fishing line should be cut up into pieces less than six inches long.

Better yet: Dispose of the line in receptacles provided by the forest preserves.
