CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Clark Street and Lake Street near the Thompson Center were open again Tuesday after the fire department and the police shut them down at midday because of a suspicious car found in a parking garage.

The car was on the fourth floor of the Government Center Self Park at Clark and Lake.

The fire department says an employee smelled gasoline when that employee was taking a look at the car because it had two flat tires.

Fire Department Chief of Special Operations Tim Walsh said authorities found 15 15-gallon containers of gasoline and a 40-pound tank of propane.

"A lot of times people will buy gasoline some place else in the state of Illinois or in another state that's cheaper and bring it back here and sell it illegally,” he said.

It’s illegal but not that unusual, Walsh says. He concedes that doesn’t usually happen in the Loop.

The Police Bomb and Arson unit was called in to make sure there was nothing more to the discovery.

A drug store and other businesses were evacuated for awhile.
