CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- City Colleges of Chicago is following the recommendations of its Inspector General to end Dr. Ignacio Lopez's presidency at Harold Washington in light of a residency violation.

In a statement, City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Juan Salgado wrote, "Dr. Lopez informed me that he earnestly believed purchasing a residence in Chicago and spending a portion of his time at such residence meant he was in compliance with the District’s residency requirement. Dr. Lopez understands and accepts that such actions were not sufficient to maintain compliance with the requirement."

Dr. Peggy Korellis, Associate Vice Chancellor–Early College, will lead Harold Washington College, on a temporary basis, while a search process for Dr. Lopez’s replacement is conducted.

You can read the Chancellor's full letter below:

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am writing to inform you that Dr. Ignacio Lopez’s appointment as president of Harold Washington College will end today, Wednesday, July 31, 2019.  Dr. Peggy Korellis, Associate Vice Chancellor–Early College, will lead Harold Washington College, on a temporary basis, while a search process for Dr. Lopez’s replacement is conducted.  Previously, Dr. Korellis successfully led Truman College, on a temporary basis, while a search for its interim president was conducted.

Dr. Lopez’s tenure as President of Harold Washington College has ended due to a residency violation.  Dr. Lopez informed me that he earnestly believed purchasing a residence in Chicago and spending a portion of his time at such residence meant he was in compliance with the District’s residency requirement.  Dr. Lopez understands and accepts that such actions were not sufficient to maintain compliance with the requirement.

I thank Dr. Lopez for his service to Harold Washington College and wish him well in his future endeavors.  I look forward to working with the Harold Washington College community to expeditiously facilitate the process of selecting its new president and continuing the college’s commitment to excellence.

Juan Salgado
