Gun Charge Filed Against Orland Square Mall Shooter

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The suspect in Monday’s fatal shooting at Orland Square Mall has been charged.

Jakharr Williams, a University Park resident, as been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in connection with the fatal shooting Monday of 18-year-old Javon Britten.

Jakharr Williams, 20, is scheduled Friday for an afternoon bond hearing at the Bridgeview courthouse. He was arrested Wednesday in Matteson following a police investigation into the murder of Javon Britten at the Orland Square Mall on Monday evening.

Although the arrest warrant carried the charge of homicide, the weapons possession charge was the only charge approved by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, police said.

Orland Park police said the shooting investifation continues. 

Britten, of Richton Park, was a senior at Rich Central High School.Williams was observed in an altercation with Britten when he pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Britten in the chest and grazing a bystander’s leg, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that Britten and Williams knew each other.
