Situation On Sesame Street: Did Grover Drop F-Bomb?

December 28, 2018 - 10:05 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's been compared to "The Dress" and "Yanni Vs. Laurel" -- a viral video clip of beloved Sesame Street muppet Grover, who almost sounds like he's saying the F-word in a skit.

On Friday, the Internet was agog at a seconds-long clip of Grover saying either, "That sounds like an excellent idea," or "That's a (expletive) excellent idea."

People Magazine credits journalist J.D. Durkin with helping popularize the debate. The magazine awaited a response from the makers of "Sesame Street."

Many listeners attribute the discrepancy to the circumstances under which people watch or listen to the clip -- or differences in their perceptions. That is not unlike the Internet discussion over an audio clip that had some people hearing "Yanni" while others heard "Laurel" and a visual puzzle in 2015 involving a mail-order dress; people saw different color schemes on the garment.
