CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago artist and muralist Mosher spent nine days a top a boom lift creating a giant, colorful mural that welcomes patrons to Recess, Fulton Market's largest outdoor patio.

"There's a big woman with a television as her head, there's the King Kong-like monkey character and a cartoon woman driving in a convertible in front," he said.

"It's like Godzilla and Mothra fighting on the side which is fun," he laughed.

The 40-foot mural is displayed on a shipping container which is set on its side, vertically.

Mosher has created murals and art in Chicago for the last 10 years.

"This is one of my bigger projects. It's a visceral experience to see something that big when we're conditioned to look at art on the screen all the time, in our hand," he said.

He hopes to make a statement and make a difference in Chicago's unique neighborhoods.

"It did coincide with Juneteenth. As a white artist, it's hard to know what my place is in all this, but I definitely have my viewpoints. If I'm going to be creating 20 to 40 feet high images, it probably behooves me to add a little diversity to those characters and think about how it impacts the neighborhood and the people who live here," Mosher said.

"We have 14,500 square feet of outdoor space. We celebrate everything that is part of Chicago," said A.G. Hollis, partner, Recess.

The restaurant is an old Ryder Truck facility which has been transformed with 30 shipping containers.

"Mosher's artwork and this space really makes a lot of sense. It's a playful nature, there's a lot of whimsy here. We don't take ourselves very seriously, especially in the times we're living in now. People need a break. You'll see that 40-foot container on its end and you'll see what Mosher created.

"We're part of a neighborhood now that's moving forward and really embracing all the public art along the viaducts. You can hear in the background the trains running. The aesthetic absolutely fits. You've got the gritty and finer finishes."

Recess, 838 West Kinzie, debuted its massive outdoor patio last last month.
