GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A veteran Gary police captain says in his 25 years with the department, this past weekend stands out as one of the most violent.

A 19-year-old Gary man was shot and killed. Fifteen other people were shot and wounded in several incidents.

"In the past 25 years, this stands out as unusual. I haven't seen this number of shootings that I can recall,” said Gary Police Capt. Samuel Roberts, who’s in charge of the investigative division.

He says police are asking for the public's help.

"A lot of these events occurred where there were witnesses. So, let's bring the violence down. Let's get the bad people out of Gary and let's make for a good summer."

Roberts said during the past 30 days before the weekend, there was a reduction in violent crime.

He says no one is in custody in connection with the weekend's shootings.
