CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- President Trump is planning to travel Saturday to southern Illinois for a political rally and a Chicago group is hoping to get the President’s attention as it seeks to get former Governor Rod Blagojevich freed from prison.

Ziff Sistrunk, who heads a criminal justice reform group called Green Slate Institute for Justice is behind the effort. They’re planning to bring petitions and letters thanking the President for considering a pardon for the former governor and freeing Blagojevich in time for Thanksgiving.

Sistrunk said this is more about criminal justice reform than the ex-governor, but it’s about him too. He said when his own brother was murdered decades ago the killer served six years. And in his words, Blagojevich got 14 years for running his mouth.

His group is gathering signatures outside city hall on Friday.

President Trump is scheduled to hold a rally at Southern Illinois Airport with U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Republican who is in a tight re-election race against Democrat Brendan Kelly in Illinois' 12th Congressional District.
