CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Consumers are being warned about scam fundraisers that claim to help victims of natural disasters such as the earthquake Tuesday in the Caribbean, the recent quake in Puerto Rico and the Australian wildfires.

Steve Bernas of the Better Business Bureau says after natural disasters, people will receive solicitations for donations by phone, in emails or online.

He says not all of them are legitimate, and some come from poorly managed charities or organizations that give most of the donation to solicitors who ask for donations on their behalf.

Bernas suggests giving to charities you know and trust. He also suggests researching less familiar charities before donating.

More information about charities is available at give.org.
