CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx takes aim at her critics and criticizes herself as she announces her re-election bid.

WBBM’s Jim Gudas reports.

Foxx announced her re-election bid in a video, in which she acknowledged she’s faced a lot of criticism, including for the way her office abruptly dropped felony charges against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett.

“Truth is, I didn’t handle it well. I own that,” Foxx said.

A special prosecutor is investigating Foxx’s decision. Chicago police accused Smollett of falsely reporting a hate attack against him last January as a way to get attention.

Foxx, the first African-American woman to be Cook County State’s Attorney, says she hopes to continue what she says are her reforms of the criminal justice system.

Foxx’s challengers include a former-judge and two former-prosecutors.
