(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's only happened once before in 15 years: cancellation of the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race on the Fox River.  And this Sunday, it's canceled again.

About 600 had signed up for the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race this Sunday.

And Dan Leahy, spokesman for the Fox Valley Park District, says it's a disappointment, but the park district has had to cancel the race.

"The historic amounts of rain we've had in May have really charged the river system, and the flow rate is over double what we would consider acceptable to run this event,” Leahy said.

Some people -- especially those who aren't expert paddlers -- could be overwhelmed by the current, he said.

The last time the race was canceled was in 2004.

This would have been the 57th year for the Mid-Am.

The Des Plaines River Canoe and Kayak Marathon, which was supposed to be earlier this month, also was canceled because of high water.
