CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The public will have a chance to weigh in on the proposed merger of four struggling South Side hospitals at hearings starting next month.

Advocate Trinity, Mercy, South Shore and St. Bernard would become one hospital system under the plan that calls for building at least one new hospital and several community health centers.

It's not clear how many of the existing hospitals would close but the group talks about replacing "outmoded, aging facilities" with its $1 billion proposal.
