Jon Burge, Former Chicago Police Commander Accused Of Torture, Has Died

September 19, 2018 - 3:13 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Jon Burge, the former Chicago police commander implicated in the torture of detained suspects, has died.

The Fraternal Order of Police on Wednesday confirmed Burge’s death, at age 70.

More than 100 suspects -- nearly all of them African-American men -- claimed Burge and his detectives tortured them into false confessions.

Burge served 4 ½ years in prison for lying under oath about torture under his watch.

“The Fraternal Order of Police does not believe the full story about the Burge cases has ever been told, particularly the case that led to his sole conviction, the exoneration of Madison Hobley for an arson that killed seven people,” the FOP said in a Facebook posting. “Hopefully, that story will be told in the coming years. We offer our condolences to the Burge family.”
