(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ford is recalling 1.4 million midsize cars because the steering wheels can become loose and even detach while driving.

The recall covers certain Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ cars from the 2014 through 2018 model years.

The automaker said Wednesday it is aware of two accidents with one injury allegedly related to the steering wheel issue. The recall adds to Ford's mounting quality issues and is just the latest in a series of safety problems that have plagued some of the automaker's vehicles.

"There are recalls and then there are recalls. This is an important one because who would want to be driving down a freeway and have the steering wheel of the vehicle come off in their hands," Jeff Gilbert, CBS Auto Reporter in Detroit, said.

He adds if you have one of those vehicles, get it into the dealer to have it checked out.
