CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois has begun handing out recreational marijuana licenses to dispensaries across the state.

The first five to receive the licenses are The Clinic Mundelein, The Clinic Effingham, Salveo Health and Wellness in Canton, and 3C Compassionate Care Centers in Naperville and Joliet.

"The existing 55 dispensaries in the state will continue to serve medical patients, and they will remain a priority," said Dina Rollman, Senior Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Green Thumb Industries.

"However, it is definitely exciting for all of the stores that received their adult use approval that we will be able to bring wellness and relief to additional people."

The Chicago-based company owns four of the five shops and co-owns the Effingham location.

"We think education will continue to be a really important part here," Rollman said. "We are not promoting drug abuse, we are promoting access to cannabis to improve people's quality of life."

Stores can begin selling cannabis to non-medical customers on Jan. 1.
