CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mourners packed St. Rita High School’s chapel on Monday for the funeral of Chicago Fire Department diver Juan Bucio, who died after a search operation on the Chicago River on Memorial Day.

WBBM's Jim Gudas reports.

There was pageantry and emotion, as well as tributes from Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago.

“Like all heroes, he was humble,” Santiago said. “He didn’t seek the glare of attention. He put his head down, went to work and was the illustration of excellence.”

Mayor Emanuel also praised the fallen firefighter.

“Juan saved many, but served all,” he said.

Bucio was lost during a rescue operation last week. The body of the boater authorities were trying to help was recovered on Friday.
