CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The special prosecutor looking into how Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx handled the Jussie Smollett contributed $1,000 to Foxx's campaign in 2016.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

Special prosecutor Dan Webb filed court documents Monday saying that when he was appointed in August, he told the judge he did not know Foxx.

Then, Webb said, a week ago Foxx's lawyer told him that he -- Webb -- had made a contribution to Foxx's political campaign and had also co-hosted a fundraiser for her. Webb said he did not remember this.

Webb said it's common for lawyers at his firm to host political fundraisers and for partners to contribute.

Foxx's campaign says Foxx was notified of the donation a week ago and that she would continue "to cooperate fully with the investigation."

The state’s attorney is under scrutiny for the way her office abruptly dropped criminal charges against former “Empire” actor Smollett. Chicago police say Smollett staged a racially charged attack on himself to gain sympathy.
