CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Inside the Food for Greater Elgin food pantry is a place for pet owners facing financial hardship.

"Besides the medical bill you didn't think you would have to pay, now you can't feed the dog," said Gerri Vaughn.

For the past eight years Vaughn has run Bruno's Pro-Bone-O Pet Pantry, serving about 80 to 100 pet owners a month.  Newsradio talked to one woman who has three cats and three dogs and a difficult time feeding them.

"Thank god she does what she does," the woman said.

Vaughn distributes pet supplies once a week out of the Elgin pantry, providing pet owners with food for cats and dogs, cat litter, pet treats and grooming products.  She also has bedding on hand for rabbits and some limited supplies for other exotic animals.

She said the goal of Bruno's Pro-Bone-O Pet Pantry is to keep pets with their owner. She cites that as the reason she started the pantry. She said in her role with the Kane County State's Attorney's office she saw how people under public guardianship needed their cat or dog, considering them family. Vaughn also noticed that people coming to the Food for Greater Elgin pantry were picking up cans of tuna to feed their cat or rice and beef for their dog.

"That's not a heathy diet on a continual basis for an animal," Vaughn said.

She said through grants and donations she distributes quality pet food and is part of a program that received products retailers can't sell for a variety of reason including packaging that isn't right.

Last year Bruno’s was able to help over 3,000 pets stay with their families
