CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Washing is free Tuesday at a suburban laundry mat thanks to a 14-year-old girl who likes to give back to her community.

It’s happening at Mama’s Coin Laundry at 138th and Atlantic in Riverdale.

Washington Junior High School 8th grader Jayera Griffin is providing a free community wash day.

WBBM Newsradio: “How did you come up with this idea?”

“I was tutoring younger kids at my school and I noticed that their clothes weren’t as clean as they could have been and I told my mom and she said that people aren’t as blessed as we are, so she said ‘w-w-j-d – what would Jayera do?’” Jayera said.

That was the inspiration, the 14-year-old said, to start raising funds for a community wash day.

She raised about a thousand dollars and the free washes were going to continue until the money ran out.

She was all smiles as people like Gloria came up and thanked her.

“It’s really wonderful what she’s doing, really wonderful, she’s a straight-A student, that’s really swell.”

Jayera’s dad, Michael, said he’s proud, but not surprised.

“She’s been doing community service since she was a little girl. She does community service at the church with the pantries and stuff like that,” he said. "We've taught her that all throughout her life to be able to help people."

Her dad is a DJ.  He was providing the soundtrack at the laundry mat.
