Faithful Flock To Guadalupe Shrine In Des Plaines

December 11, 2018 - 9:37 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of pilgrims are gathered in Des Plaines to mark the Roman Catholic feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The celebration began at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with the first of 11 Masses being said at the Shrine on the grounds of Maryville Academy.

Although many speak little or no English, their devotion is unmistakable. Many of the pilgrims have brought rosaries, votive candles or bouquets of flowers, which they have left at focal points in the plaza.

Celebrations have taken place at Maryville since the 1990s, but attendance has exploded since it was declared a shrine by the late Francis Cardinal George in 2013. It is now said to be the largest such observance outside of Mexico City.

The celebration continues through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
