(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A weekend festival will look to defend an F-word that organizers feel has taken some unfair criticism.

That word is feminist.

"It still has that ‘dirty word’ connotation," said Emily Biegel, director of Southwest Suburban Activists. "It's really just about equality."

The group is hosting Saturday's FEM Fest at the Feed Arts and Cultural Center in Kankakee.

"We want to reclaim and further explain the term 'feminism' and why it's for everybody," Biegel said. "We're going to have a lot of stuff on the walls from various artists, vocal performances and speakers that are survivors of domestic violence. Everybody who is performing or speaking is a variety of genders and gender identities and all identify as a feminist."

Biegel is hoping the festival inspires visitors to turn their passion for equal rights into action.

"Everything that anybody is concerned with right now is a feminist issue. Things like domestic violence, gun violence prevention and equality of the sexes."
