CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Emanuel is warning Democrats to avoid talk of impeaching President Donald Trump as they move towards elections this fall.

In a chat with the media company Axios, Emanuel said impeachment is a legal and constitutional standard and it hasn’t been met at this time. It should not be politicized, he stressed.

“I’m angry at what he’s done,” Emanuel said, referring to his sometimes political nemesis, Republican President Donald Trump, “but it is a legal, constitutional standard. When we get to it, we, as a country, collectively, will know it.”

Emanuel says Americans knew that standard was met with Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson. The Mayor did not mention his former boss, President Bill Clinton, who—like Johnson—was successfully impeached by the U.S. House but not convicted by the Senate.

The mayor, who once ran the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, says Democrats can run on being against President Trump this year, but in the national elections, they’d better have some ideas for the future.
