(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Emanuel this week will ask the Chicago City Council to impose a further crackdown on e-cigarettes and vaping devices.

Emanuel said too many young people are still “vaping” with electronic cigarettes, so he wants to increase the tax on liquid nicotine from 80 cents per container to $1.50 per container.

Chicago already has about the most restrictive regulations on electronic cigarettes and vaping products. The mayor said Monday it hasn’t been enough to stop the tobacco companies from trying to entice young people.

The tougher measure he plans to introduce will also require that e-cigarettes and other vaping products be kept behind the counter so that they are harder to get.

Emanuel said tobacco companies are lying when they say vaping can help people quit smoking.
