CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Now we know how Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will try to deal with rival mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy: color him Trump.

McCarthy, the former Chicago police superintendent fired by Emanuel in 2015, announced his candidacy for mayor Wednesday.

Just hours after McCarthy announced he would run against him, Emanuel’s campaign launched an attack with an online ad seeking to link the former cop with President Trump.

Trump’s popularity is not high in Chicago, following a series of negative tweets and statements about the city. McCarthy for years was with the New York Police Department.

“Mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy has a very big fan,” the ad’s narrator says.

Trump, a New Yorker, says in the ad: “The head of the police in Chicago is a person I know. He’s a phenomenal guy.”

“When Garry McCarthy says he's a conservative Democrat, the only part we question is the word Democrat,” said Pete Giangreco, spokesman for the Emanuel campaign. “Donald Trump thinks McCarthy is ‘a phenomenal guy’ because they're both cut from the same New York cloth and embrace the same bitter, divisive rhetoric and policies.  But personal bitterness isn’t a way to build a bright future for Chicago.”

Emanuel fired McCarthy in 2015 amid the racially charged controversy of a white police officer who fatally shot a black teen suspect, Laquan McDonald.

McCarthy says Emanuel used him as a scapegoat.
